Jacksonville Transvaginal Mesh Failure Attorneys

Transvaginal Mesh Failure

Around 100,000 women in the U.S. undergo surgery each year to have transvaginal mesh devices implanted to alleviate the symptoms of stress urinary incontinence (SUI), pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and other conditions. According to the Food and Drug Administration, an increasing number of these patients are experiencing recurrence of urinary incontinence and many serious health problems related to transvaginal mesh failure. The failure of this device often results in a wide range of painful and sometimes disfiguring conditions, such as the following:

  • Infections and bleeding
  • Painful intercourse and urination
  • Scarring
  • Perforations of the bladder, bowel and blood vessels
  • Recurrence of urinary incontinence
  • Many other painful conditions that erode the patient's independence, quality of life and emotional well-being

How Transvaginal Mesh Devices Fail

Of the 100,000 women who have mesh surgery each year, more than three in four patients decide to have the mesh implanted transvaginally, instead of through the abdomen. Transvaginal surgeries tend to be less invasive, allow faster recovery times and generally result in no visible scars. The surgeon shapes the mesh device to the unique contours of the organ it supports before it is implanted in order to prevent the mesh from migrating and causing many of the conditions listed above. Transvaginal mesh failure occurs when the mesh does not bind to the surrounding tissue through improper surgical techniques and/or the woman's body rejecting the device. When the device begins to migrate out of place, it can erode the surrounding tissue and severely compromise the patient's health. In worst cases, the mesh causes a condition known as "erosion," where the mesh erodes through the vaginal wall and protrudes out of the vaginal tissue.

Some patients who have surgery to remove the mesh discover that surgeons are unable to remove some of the mesh due to tissue involvement with other organs. These unfortunate patients experience persistent pain, bleeding, discharge, infection and other problems for the rest of their lives. Those who have the mesh devices surgically removed also experience persistent health problems. Difficulties are primarily due to scarring, which may make intercourse extremely painful or impossible.
